Day 1 of 30
Hello World & Hello Me
Who I am & why I’m doing this
My name is Mildrette. I’m a junior Android developer at Afkanerd in Bamenda, Cameroon. I started this challenge today because I’m tired of letting procrastination win.
I live with PCOS/PMDD and some days the fatigue and brain fog make it feel impossible to show up. But I’m done waiting for a perfect day. Today is day one.
What I learned today
Today I learned about variables in Kotlin. There are two types:
val— a value that cannot changevar— a variable that can change
// val cannot be reassigned
val name = "Mildrette"
// var can be reassigned
var day = 1
day = 2 // this works fine
Kotlin can also infer the type — you don’t always have to tell it what type a variable is:
val city = "Bamenda" // String
val year = 2025 // Int
val isStarted = true // Boolean
Code I wrote today
fun main() {
val name = "Mildrette"
var day = 1
val challenge = "30-Day Learning Challenge"
println("Hello! My name is $name")
println("Today is Day $day of my $challenge")
println("Let's go!")
}
Output:
Hello! My name is Mildrette
Today is Day 1 of my 30-Day Learning Challenge
Let's go!
How I felt today
Today felt exciting and scary at the same time. The procrastination voice was there — telling me to start tomorrow. But I didn’t listen.
I kept it simple today. Short, clean, working code. That’s enough for day one.
